What is a Backflow preventer?
Backflow preventers help keep contaminated water from getting into our county and city drinking water supply. They are put on near the water meter as a preventative measure. All sprinkler systems are required to have a backflow preventer installed in Georgia.
What is Potable and Non Potable Water?
Potable is water than can be used for consumption. Drinking water for cooking, and bathing. This type of water is clean and is ok for human use. Non Potable water is the opposite. This water is not ok for drinking and should not be used for bathing or cooking. Non potable water example include rain water run off, lake water, stream beds, retention ponds, and other types of natural water sources.
Non Potable Water for Sprinkler Systems
Here is a Back Flow link that has a little more information on the different classifications of water and its proper uses.
What is BackFlow?
Backflow happens when water from a source is used and may flow back into the original source. This can happen when a sprinkler system is using county water, and if no back flow preventer is installed, the water from the underground pipes can flow back into the water supply. This can be bad news for you and your neighbors! Be sure if you are having a new sprinkler system installed or have an existing irrigation system, make sure you have a backflow. This type of back flow will have a dual check valve to prevent contamination of the water supply.
