When to Plant Sod
Climate and location really has an impact on the best times to plant sod. Fescue sod is the most tempermental type of sod. It likes cooler weather, and requires a lot of watering and maintenance. Planting cool season grass in the middle of summer is never recommended. The excessive heat will burn up the roots, and the grass will never establish. Some warm season grasses such as Emerald Zoysia, Zeon Zoysia, and Meyer Zoysia are best planted in the early months of spring.
Planting Zoysia Sod
The best time to plant zoysia sod is when temperatures are starting to get into the mid seventies into the eighties. Most types of zoysia come out of winter dormancy only when the days are longer, and the temperatures reach 80 degrees plus. Here in Georgia it is never advised to install zoysia sod during dormancy. Our winters are never predictable and unexpected cold weather can damage the root systems of the freshly installed sod. Contact us if you have any questions on DIY sod installation.
